equine dreams and other news

Shayel is really getting into horse riding. She started taking lessons about 2 years ago and has been having a blast. She only goes a couple times a month so she hasn’t made a ton of progress but she enjoys it none the less.

She started learning English style and has been doing western this summer. She has decided she wants to get back into English so we’ll probably switch after she gets a bit more comfortable with western.

She has been enjoying the equestrian events at the olympics so much! It’s getting her really excited to get good enough to do jumping and get into competitions. Right now she’s watching the cross country event and is hooting and hollering as much as she does when she watches baseball with David. She was visibly shaken when one of the US riders fell off her horse (horse and rider unhurt fortunately) but recovered quickly and didn’t seem to be affected with her own riding which is a good sign as she’s never seen a rider fall before.

She also informed us “whoever tried their best, I will respect them” when were discussing why we were excited for Michael Phelps (I swam competitively my whole life and still enjoy watching swimming competitions) and the American relay team. She’s such an amazing diplomat - we’ve noticed that about her since she was a toddler. A common way she’ll put preferences is “I like it all but this is my favorite” or “I like it but I don’t want it right now”.

In other Shayel news, we’ve been slow with bike riding. She still uses training wheels but she rode 3 miles on Sunday. She informed us that her legs were tired but she showed great perseverance. Now we know she can ride to school this year which is nice.

She’s also getting a nice little attitude on her which terrifies me thinking about the pre-teen years to come hehe.

School starts next week and she’ll be in first grade - so hard to believe!

That really resonated with me … I like the picture that emerged here, that it’s about principles and –um— *commands* rather than “don’ts”.

A few years ago the Sisters of Charity in Calcutta really taught me that there’s real beauty in routine and freedom in discipline. TOo bad I turn that around all the time and start making myself crazy with self-imposed rules and deadlines and legalisms… it’s a struggle for sure.
