who am I?
It has recently struck me that I don’t know who I am outside of a ministry setting. I feel unsettled as mother, wife, friend, graphic artist, magazine designer, knitter, reader, thinker, writer … as if taking off “minister” (in an official vocational capacity you understand - I fully realize that we are all ministers all the time) makes me an incomplete person.
So, I’ve been working through this, thinking about it, pondering it, rolling it back and forth across the surface of the “leetle gray cells” as Poirot would say.
Today, I propose to you other things I could be to make myself feel complete.
pirate - except that I don’t think I could handle the infrequency of bathing
circus performer - I’ve heard from my husband that I have a creepy thing going with fonts, maybe that will become the new crowd pleaser
dog - my 3 year old recently informed us that her aspiration is to be a dog when she grows up, maybe I can take a cue from her
hobo - I always thought it’d be cool to ride in train cars
professional mud wrestler - I don’t really “get it” but apparently some people get affirmation doing it
marathon runner - I’m up to 3 miles
What’cha think?

I think you’re putting too much stock in titles or naming what you are, rather than just being who you are. It’s a common thing we do here in the west and it’s very difficult to overcome in our culture. I think if you look at yourself more globally you’ll find you’re all of those things plus alot more … we’re all greater than the sum of our parts after all. And none of us is just one thing. We’re all several things; it’s what makes us interesting.
I know
but it’s not that easy. I have spent my whole life “in the church”, most of it “in ministry”. My faith, my significance as a person, as a christian, has been found in those places.
This is a common problem with pastors who leave the pastorate and get jobs elsewhere. It’s a process that is complex and nuanced and David and I are going through it.
I was just talking about that by being a little silly
I don’t need reassurance that “I’m ok” although I appreciate your comment sonja.
May I suggest mermaid? My youngest was completely dedicated to being a mermaid until about 6 months ago when she fell under the peer pressure of her sister and decided that she needed to be a scientist, too. You know, traipsing around the mouths of volcanoes, or the outer reaches of the solar system. How boring. Almost as boring as “minister.”
I know exactly what you are saying and where you are coming from ……. mermaid sounds good too! Just out of interest, as you knit, are you on Ravelry?
hobo’s no good… definitely no showers.
but pirate should still be in the running. you could be a “freshwater pirate” so that bathing could took place whenever you so please.
but really, can any of us beat the mermaid idea? you could even dye your hair red and sell you voice to an octopus.
mermaid! LOL
Lyn - yes I am but I haven’t done anything with it for ages.
Maria - LOL, that’s awesome
Well, I actually like just Makeesha. But of the list you gave I like pirate. I can see you with a patch over the eye making those miscreants walk the plank.
Another suggestion that I would make is explorer/adventurer going to far off, exotic places.
I was thinking roller-derby but I’ll ditto the mermaid suggestion.
I go through a major reevaluation of “who am I” every few years, usually corresponding with the constant changes that our family seems to be always in the midst of.
Let me know when you’ve got it all figured out.
I found some ideas for you. I’m quite partial to Rodeo Clown myself
Such a helpful soul I am.
Bonny - yeah definitely. You’ll be waiting a LONG time if you want me to figure it out
Heather. that’s awesome! Rodeo Clown - YES! and even better - in the gay rodeo.
