holding allegiances lightly

From Ray Ortlund (ht:bob.blog)

The Judaizers in Galatia did not see their distinctive – the rite of circumcision – as problematic. They could claim biblical authority for it in Genesis 17 and the Abrahamic covenant. But their distinctive functioned as an addition to the all-sufficiency of Jesus himself. Today the flash point is not circumcision. It can be Reformed theology. But no matter how well argued our position is biblically, if it functions in our hearts as an addition to Jesus, it ends up as a form of legalistic divisiveness. (read the whole thing on Ray’s blog)

Wise words to remember - I think when this is not happening, that is when we shift into legalistic fundamentalism - which can happen to conservative and liberal and all different flavors of Christian. The “smell” of legalistic fundamentalism is distinct and strong and repulsive. It exudes from us creating an arrogant and rigid posture that does not say “Jesus”.

Amen. Isn’t it one of the Johns (I, II, III, who can keep them straight?) where John does a whole circular thing on God is love, and if we are of God, then we love, and if we love, then we are of God because God is love?

Rigid and arrogant aren’t lovely. Stanky, that’s what they are.
