Come, Holy Spirit
(ht A Living Alternative)
Come, Holy Spirit,
bending or not bending the grasses,
appearing or not above our heads in a tongue of flame,
at hay harvest or when they plough in the orchards,
or when snow covers crippled firs in the Sierra Nevada.I am only a human being: I need visible signs.
I tire easily, building the stairway of abstraction.
Many a time I asked, you know it well,
that the statue in church lift its hand, only once, just once, for me.But I understand that signs must be human,
therefore, call one person, anywhere on earth,
not me-after all I have some decency-
and allow me, when I look at that person,
to marvel at you.-Czeslaw Milosz

Mak,
This is truly lovely. Thanks for posting it. Also, I really liked your stages of faith post–I wonder if it’s at all related to Fowler’s stages of spiritual development–a cross section study would be fascinating, but I’m afraid I’m too lazy.
Also, since I’m typing–your query about VBS and the cross-proselytization phobia of evangelicals is very astute. Given my current onslaught from a certain gossipy evangelical, I’m particularly sensitive to the hypocrisy inherent in the whole collective mindset. Nevermind my gross generalizations–it’s the cytotoxic drugs. I can blame them for everything.
blame ‘em while you’ve got ‘em sister.
No shit. Am I allowed to swear on an emergent blog?
Oh, silly me, I forgot to whom I was speaking. Also, maybe I would benefit from a Beth Moore study. I think she’s an alien life form sent to re-bondify (that’s a made up word) women with her faux-intelligence. Maybe she’ll sue me for slander.
I welcome all forms of cussing and any insult of Beth Moore so we’re kosher lol
So glad that you picked this up too. I was really moved by it. In fact, I read it daily as a reminder. I want to be that person, part of that community, through which people see “the statue lift it’s hand”.
Peace,
Jamie
