Christian feminism

I can’t believe I forgot to mention this. There is a new blog out there that explores Christian Feminism from a Biblical and positive perspective.

Check it out :)

This is from the about page.

what is christian feminism? why don’t we start with what it is not.

christian feminism is not about hating men.

christian feminism is not derived from liberalism.

christian feminism is not secular feminism.

christian feminism does not think men and women are the same.

christian feminism does not think women are superior to men.

christian feminism is not just for women.

as i understand it, christian feminism sees, from scripture, that men and women are equal in matters of ministry, leadership and marriage. it sees both similarities and differences in women and men.

i, linda, am the instigator who started this blog and i have some accomplices. most are from the blogs i wonder as i wander but also emerging women and various and sundry other pastors and educators.

Thanks for sharing this site. I’ve been studying egalitarianism and the various interpretations of Paul’s writings (which are most often used to limit the roles of women). I just finished 10 Lies the church tells women by J. Lee Grady, a man, who advocates being “pro-woman” without being “anti-man.” His book is an easy read, but a thorough look into biblical feminism, all that it is and all that it’s not.

thanks for that Tia, I haven’t studied “Christian feminism” much in all honesty - mostly because I grew up in a pentecostal world where, for the most part, it was pretty egalitarian. It wasn’t until I was old enough to experience the dark underbelly, to hear the subtext, that I realized a need for the research. That sounds like something I need to read.

Thank you so much for sharing this site! For a long time I thought I was alone in not buying all that patriarchy stuff. I’m pretty young, so everyone keeps telling me that I’ll change my mind once I “grow up and start listening to God.” It’s kind of insulting, really. Thanks for providing this bit of encouragement!

I think you’d really like it. The author is actually a little bit too Pentecostal for my tastes. :) But his research is top notch. It’s thorough without being too technical. He doesn’t just cherry pick the evidence that supports his take and then leaves the rest, he pretty much dismantles all the evidence that supports the other side by delving deep into the original texts of scripture, exploring the historical and cultural contexts, the original language and so forth. J. Lee Grady, the author, heads up the Mordecai project that helps women in abusive relationship and calls upon the church to release women in ministry. I was astounded by how some of the wacky interpretations of gender roles originated, how unbiblical they are, and how prevalent they are within many churches. It’s a very good read.

Cahleen - shine on dear one! I can’t tell you how many young women I’m seeing now buying in to patriarchal crap, it scares me to be honest. So good for you! How young are you out of curiosity?
