fav. coffee shop closing

David and I really like coffee shops - I think me even more so. They are classic “connection points” for us in the community. We can walk in, chat with the barista, get to know him/her a bit more each time we come, then sit down with some a delicious something or other latte and people watch, maybe strike up a conversation with another customer. Many coffee shops we frequent also have a certain “sub culture” that tends to dominate the scene - one seems to have a lot of homosexual couples, one has a lot of goths, one is very “artsy” and bohemian and another is mostly college students studying - so you can definitely pick your flavor of people as well as coffee. And then of course most have poetry readings, live music, art shows and other interesting entertainment.

If we walk out our apartment, down the sidewalk about 1/4 of a block and through a parking lot we get to the Wired Bean. We like the Wired Bean - they have good drinks, really nice and fun baristas, live music on occasion - but most of all we like that they are a quick walk from our apartment and about half way between our house and the Episcopal Church where Revolution meets twice a month. We like to take “non car” transport as much as possible, which is often since we live on a major university campus and only have 1 car, so it’s nice to have a good coffee shop so close. We’ve gone through many Wired Bean punch cards in the past year that we’ve lived in this location.

Today, when I went into the Wired Bean with the girls (Shayel usually orders herself a “kids vanilla steamer barely warm please), I discovered that as of Sunday, they’re closing. It can’t be so! But alas, it IS so. I mentioned, half to myself, that I now have nowhere nearby to hang out. To which the girl behind the counter mentioned that there’s a St*rbucks going up down the street. To which I screwed up my face and shook my head passionately. Blah. I’m sad today.

We have now lived in Colorado for almost 6 years - longer than I have lived consecutively anywhere in my entire life. Before that it was 5 years in MI from 8th grade through high school graduation. I don’t “put down roots”, it’s just not really in my dna to do that. I don’t really develop hang outs or stomping grounds. I have only had a few INCREDIBLY CLOSE friends my whole life and within a year of moving, we drift. So now that we’ve been here this long, I’m starting to do those thing - develop long lasting well rooted friendships and have signature stores and hang-outs. And now, it’s the coffee shop that’s leaving me. :(

Starbucks?! BLECK! It’s not even as remotely good as ANY of the coffee shops around town! Stupid company! And there are always a lot of people at the Wired Bean… do you need a hug? Or maybe a cup of coffee? :-)
