the lost art of the farmer’s market
treehugger is right, the farmer’s market is a lost art.
We have 2 farmer’s market locations in our town and another in a nearby town. You’d think that would be a good thing for 2 medium sized towns - - on the contrary. Not only are these farmer’s markets pretty pitiful (one is better than the other) with how much produce they have but there are more “retail” booths than there are actual “farm produce”. The one we went to yesterday wasn’t TOO bad, but it was still not really what I’d like to see at a farmer’s market.
And this is not unique to my town, I’ve heard from friends that their farmer’s markets involve people buying produce from a retail market and reselling it at the farmer’s market. WHAT?!
urgh, so frustrating. There has to be a way to make this process worth it for the small family farm and the buyer. The other thing I’d like to see in our town is a hand made co-op where local artisans of hand made goods and art can have a place to sell their products without having the overhead of a storefront….I have too many dreams LOL

You should come to Seattle. Every neighborhood in the city has its own farmers market full of farm produce, fish, flowers, bread, and art. They are such a delight!
oh shut up - rub my nose in it why don’t you
I have yet to make it to my local farmers market this season. Basically that means I have had a conflict every single Saturday morning since May. I find that depressing. Not that it isn’t a pathetic market anyway…
Nashville’s is okay. Could certainly use some work, but it seems like they make an effort, people just aren’t quick to embrace it.
