for the ladies
** WARNING: The content below is for the ladies. I know some of you men are going to look anyway but I am not responsible for the impact this might have on you. You have been duly warned.
One of the things you can consider using to reduce your impact on the environment and live more naturally is a diva cup.
Now, at first look you’re going to cringe and say “no way” but think about it a bit more. The learning curve can be 3 months or more (sometimes none at all) but when you’ve mastered it, chances are you will wonder why you didn’t switch sooner…and you produce ZERO waste. Think of the impact that will make on your footprint over a lifetime of monthly cycles.
The added benefit is because you aren’t exposing yourself to chemicals, adhesives and other toxins, you might find that you experience fewer PMS symptoms, a shorter cycle and less overall discomfort (all of which I have experienced).
Give it a thought, I’ve been using it for 2 years now and wouldn’t go back if someone paid me.

okay that’s cool. I had no idea that there were non-diaper like alternatives out there…
Hm. I’ll have to think about that. I tried those “instead” things but didn’t like them. But this seems different. You really wouldn’t go back? Hm.
well, unfortunately, I have found that after ten pregnancies and nine live births, the muscle tone is shot. I have tried and tried the Diva cup and cannot make it stay put, stay comfortable and not leak.
Mak, well, I’ll admit to being one of the guys who read through despite your warning. Thanks for the public service announcement…I’ve passed it on to my better half.
Jim - hehe..I think disclaimers often serve to entice more than to repel don’t they?
I’m not one to be “shy” about these sorts of things but I know many are so I try to respect that a bit.
Cynthia - yes, I imagine 9 babes would strain those muscles a bit, thanks for mentioning that. I have heard of a few mamas who have that problem. I think that for some, the keeper works better, which is the same idea but a different material - latex vs. silicone and also a different size
lily - instead is different. I never tried them but know women who hate them but like the diva. I wouldn’t go back for anything, it’s so easy and convenient and much more comfortable on all levels…but i know for some the “ick” factor might be a deterrent. However, it’s really not that big a deal when you get used to it.
Looks interesting! Does it feel uncomfortable? Do you know it’s there? I can’t wear tampons as I can feel them and I find them really uncomfy!
Thanks for the tip Mak … maybe I will give the Keeper a try.
lyn, I can’t feel it at all, totally comfortable. But I have always been able to wear tampons ok. The one thing that is good about this sort of thing over tampons (tmi alert) is that it doesn’t dry you out like tampons (since tampons absorb all moisture)
hm! I’ll have to give that a try. there’s a store not too far from here that carries it.
hello makeesha! i found your new [to me] blog through a high school friend, ed. small world…
i have had very little sucess with my diva cup, but i haven’t given up yet. [i've had less then 24 menstrual cycles in 8 years of marriage] i love the instead cup, and per my midwife’s recommendation, we just wash them in hot water and reuse them. not fda approved, by any means, but they seem to stay put better for me. cloth pads, however, are not nearly as “neat” but if you are already using “external” protection, they are infinitely more comfortable.
meggan - oh yeah? wow, that is a small world.
my homegrp leader is proud to use something similar called a mooncup - we have a joke about not putting it in the dishwasher and for the other 3 weeks of the month it makes a great shot glass…
bloody mary anyone?
ROFLOL
I would recomend David trying the “Man Cup.” I invented it. It is a dixie cup with an elastic waste. NO more trips to the bathroom and wastefull water flushing. Also, my co-workers have commented on my sexy musk sent…. And my dog won’t leave me alone when i get home from work. And on the bus, people give me money… and I’ve made my mom cry and ask “where did I go wrong.” And I reply that “i’m emergent! Damnit!”
yeah, maybe the man cup is a bad idea.
Ok, hope this isn’t tmi …
I was motivated to give the Diva cup another try …
No problems at all! Comfortable, staying put, no leakage … what’s up with that?!
been doing lots of kegals? I know that stuff in there can often take several years to return its tone..maybe that happened? or maybe I willed it to be! It’s a miracle!

Nope, third day nothing but leaking. Couldn’t get it right. UGH!!! Oh well.
To be candid: TMI alert!!!! What about if you only have a couple days where anything substantial happens and then many more of just “skids?” I can’t imagine wearing a whole cup just for that. Any advice?
that’s essentially what happens with me but I still use it. Except sometimes on the last day I’ll use an organic non chlorine bleached panty liner.
Hey! Just wanted you to know that I’m trying out Insteads (Target carries them) in preparation for switching to a reusable cup. Thanks!
