Finding God in the other

This is such a great “sermon” from Samir Selmanonvic. I have no doubt the language and references will freak out a lot of Christians but IMO, the substance is profound and beautiful and right-on.

The ideas of finding God in the other and accepting that God is present outside of Christianity and that he is present and moving in Non Christians and that Christianity doesn’t possess ALL of the knowledge of God and goodness is simultaneously moving and profound, terrifying and humbling.

If God is only in Christianity, then we have emptied the world of God.

There is definitely a “universalist” tone to some of what Selmanovic is saying but I challenge you to overcome that a bit and hear the heart of the message. What I heard was that Christianity as a religion, as an institution cannot become an idol - something that we use to manipulate God and his sovereignty…a message I think we all need to remember.

sounds cool, will have to give it a listen, ty for highlighting it…

One of the Qs i’m wondering about at the moment is how much of christianity a hinderance/wrong - in that we ask people to become christians but is that what we really should be asking?

I keep wondering how much are we emeshed in following christianity rather than Jesus? How much is it about welcoming people into our own institutions/kingdoms rather than God’s kingdom?

    I’m not even sure i can comprehend/express what I am wondering…

hehe… I rarely can comprehend my own words so I understand. But I think you’re making total sense and I think it’s a very reasonable question to ask. Christianity is, after all, a man made institution. God breathed, Spirit led, inspired to be true, but created by fallible man none the less.

And of course, Eastern Orthodoxy would say we’re all off base with what is Traditional and True “Christianity” and so would just about every other denomination and sect…so who’s version of being Christian is “right” anyway?

Good questions to ask IMO. I listened to a podcast from wiredparish last night that was about Scripture and inerrancy and those sort of things..it was really interesting and very very good.
